Julie profile

Welcome to I love Authors Interview 18. Today we have the pleasure of meeting Julie. E. Grace, author of A Walk with Heavenly Spirits which is on tour with Celebrate Lit from 3rd-6th April. Let’s all give Julie a warm greeting.

A Walk with Heavenly Spirits

Hi  Julie, it is a pleasure to have you sitting on my couch today.

I’m so glad you are doing a blog tour with Celebrate Lit as it gives me an opportunity to get to know you better.

Julie – Thank you, Margaret, the pleasure is mine.

Julie – Yes thank you.

I like to do things a little differently to the usual interviews. So now I want you to imagine that we are on a desert island. The sea lapping on the shores and not a ship in sight.

For my first question, if you can take your eyes away from the breathtaking scenery..

What book would you crave to read (you already have the bible, so please pick another book)?

Julie – I would want it to be a book on survival skills so I could make the best out of the situation.  It would be a shock at first not knowing what to expect. I would need to take care of my everyday needs until help came. Knowledge is key.

I can see that you have a practical side Julie, what a great choice. And I like the fact that you would want to make the best out of the situation. You are one cool lady.

This means then that you are likely to explore.

As it happens you find a rowing boat hidden in a cave, what name would you paint on it and why?

Julie – I would paint “FAITH” on it.  To remind me each time I looked at it, to have faith in God to sustain me through the circumstances. I would remember that God is a God of miracles and pray for him to give me the strength I needed to endure until I could be rescued.

How right you are, God is a God of miracles and waiting for his rescue will require faith. That is an apt name to be sure and a great way to remind yourself of His faithfulness.

So while you are waiting ..

I know you like writing but do you have another passion?

Julie – I have always been interested in art since I was a young child. My mother gave me oil painting kits for Christmas and it evolved from there.  I am self-taught in oils and pastels and try to balance my love of art with my passion for writing.  I paint mainly landscapes.

A few years ago,  I branched out into digital art.  Art is another form of expression that gives me great joy.

I agree Julie art is a wonderful form of expression. As a concession, I will allow you to have your art materials so that you can paint.

On to the next question Julie

The desert island is very hot, do you like hot or cold weather and which helps you focus on your writing better?

Julie – I’m not a hot weather person.  My favorite time of the year is Spring when everything is new again and the temperatures are in the 70’s.  Winter time with the snow is beautiful but during really cold periods, I find myself indoors at my desk typing away on a novel while sipping on a cup of tea or hot chocolate.  It becomes my most productive time as far as writing is concerned.

Oh, Spring is a favourite of mine too Julie, all the new beginnings.

Sadly this is my final question..

If you could be one of your characters which would it be and why?

Julie – It would be Allison.   The part of Allison’s journey that I would love to experience,  is her visits by Heavenly Spirits.  To be able to travel in time and experience the supernatural would be awesome.

Wouldn’t it just. You have left me intrigued Julia. This has been a pleasant desert island visit on my couch today. Thank you, Julia, for sharing with us.

Yes give a round of applause for Julie E. Grace and don’t forget to look out for her book.

Julie has also included a GIVEAWAY today, which you will find at the bottom of my post. Click on the code for a chance to win.

Guest Post from J.E. Grace

My inspiration for writing A Walk with Heavenly Spirits:
I was thinking about a Christmas Carol and the ghosts of Christmas past, present, and future one day. I’m a Christian author, so I thought, why not use Heavenly Spirits to enlighten a person who has lost their way. It just evolved from there. I did a lot of praying for direction during my writing process and consulting God’s word along the way. God I felt was giving me the inspiration to write it. As a result, I found myself getting very emotional while writing certain parts of the book which is something I had never experienced before with any of my other novels. I was feeling the characters pain and /or joy at times.
My purpose for the story was to get the message across, that we are all broken, but God uses the broken for great things. Within the story, Allison’s one decision to finally follow the path God intended for her, not only changes her life but the lives of the all the people who come to know her.

Margaret Kazmierczak talks to Laura V Hilton

Today on I love Authors Interview 17, we meet Laura V. Hilton. It is a pleasure to have you sitting on my couch today Laura. You are also part of the Celebrate Lit Scavenger Hunt which is featured further down after this interview.

Laura – Thank you, Margaret.

Now while you are sitting comfortably on the sofa I want you to imagine that we are on a desert island. Can you hear the peace and quite?

Margaret Kazmierczak interviews Cara

We won’t be interrupted here Laura!

My first question then..

Who would you like to be marooned on the island with and why?

Laura – An Amish man. They are very creative and great at building and might be able to build a decent shelter and something to generate heat – like maybe solar panels or something  🙂

That sounds like a wise choice Laura. Definitely very practical. I love the way the Amish help one another.

So you have your shelter built..

What luxury would you like to have washed up on the beach?

LauraGroceries. Delivered weekly would be great. That way I won’t have to scrounge for food and have to eat nasty insects. Oh, and bottled water since salt water isn’t drinkable.

That’s a big ask Laura 🙂  However, I think it would be more fun seeing what dishes you come up with to compliment a side of insects!

A hidden challenge

You find a rowing boat hidden in a cave, what name would you paint on it and why?

Laura – Never mind painting a name! Is it sea-worthy? I’d be loading her up and heading out and praying for a Coast Guard rescue.

Sorry Laura, but its bottom is missing due to the last person using it for firewood! Mind you your Amish man would probably be able to fix something up.

Tell me something about your book

What favourite sentence do you like from your most recent published book?

Laura – Girls like her were trouble in all capitals, italicized, and in bold print. T. R. O. U. B. L. E.

You have me intrigued Laura with that sentence Laura.

So to go with your insect salad Laura..

You are allowed one favourite meal on the island what would it be?

Laura Pizza! And cheesecake.

And with that mouthwatering dish, it is time to say a huge thank you to Laura for joining me on my couch. It’s been fun and I hope you have enjoyed your time on the desert island.

Laura – I have Margaret and thank you for being part of this Scavenger Hunt.

Your very welcome now please give Laura a massive hand.

I love Authors Interview 16

Welcome readers to I love Authors Interview 16. Today I have Kristen Hogrefe on my couch.  Her book The Revolutionary is on tour with Celebrate Lit from 10-23 April. I am delighted that I have been allowed to interview Kristen and read her book. My review will be out on 19 April and I hope you will visit again to read it.

The Revolutionary

Now, let’s all give Kristen a warm welcome.

Kristen – Thank you so much, Margaret, it is lovely to meet you.

Thank you, Kristen. I know we are sitting on a beautiful couch, however, I would like you to imagine we are stranded on a desert island!

Kristen – This sounds fun!

Let’s get started then, Kristen.

Who would you like to be marooned on the island with and why?

Kristen – I’d pick my twin brother and his wife because they are two of my best friends. Also, with their background in the park service and wildland firefighting, I’m pretty sure we would not only survive but thrive.

I am sure you would Kristen with such helpful family. It sounds like all you would need to do is sit back and write!

For my next question, we are going to let you have something special as a treat.

What luxury would you like to have washed up on the beach?

Kristen – A large, waterproof Tervis containing an iced caramel latte would be wonderful.

I think we can arrange that, but your brother and sister-in-law might be a bit jealous so perhaps we might need to send you two more Kristen!

While we sit here basking in the sun can you tell me…

What favourite sentence do you like from your most recent published book?

Kristen – “Portia, nothing worth having is easy. You need to train if for no other reason than to prove to yourself that you can.”

I like that saying, Kristen. It is a good motto for life. I think it is similar to “I can’t do it yet”, rather than “I can’t do it.” We all need to strive for those goals.

There’s not a cloud in the sky and it is so peaceful Kristen so tell me..

I know you like writing but do you have another passion?

KristenI really enjoy music and have played the piano and sung in church groups since I was a teenager. Just recently, I started learning guitar, because why not? Music aside, I enjoy trying new things, especially when they involve the outdoors. This year, I went skiing for the first time and had a blast.

That’s a wonderful talent to have to be able to play the piano. I love your can-do attitude, yes why not learn to play the guitar and ski. I hope you go on to do many other interesting pursuits too. How about bungee jumping?

Oh, what a shame this is my last question, Kristen.

To leave the island, you have to describe your main character in five words, can you tell me what they would be?

Kristen – Small, brave, broken, resourceful, visionary

I am so excited about reading your book Kristen, your description of the main character is calling to me! It’s been a privilege to talk to you and I hope you have a successful tour with Celebrate Lit.

Kristen – Thank you once again, Margaret.

Be upstanding for the talented Kristen Hogrefe. Yes get your hands out of your pockets and show your appreciation.

If you would like to purchase Kristen’s book then click here.

And don’t forget Kristen has a GIVEAWAY at the end of my post, so please do enter.

I never imagined when I began the journey into this story that I would be so taken with the story. It will leave your breathless, hopeful and is an excellent reminder of the quality writing the author always delivers. This is by far the best book in my opinion and I truly didn’t want the adventure to end.
on April 6, 2018
Format: Kindle Edition
Each addition to Jody Hedlund’s medieval YA series is a delight. As I read A Loyal Heart, I found all the elements I loved in the previous books (An Uncertain Choice, A Daring Sacrifice, For Love & Honor)—romance, danger, chivalry, faith. Hedlund weaves it all into a captivating and thrilling story for Lady Olivia and Sir Aldric, and I wholeheartedly enjoyed both the story and its characters. A Loyal Heart makes the perfect choice for readers of YA romance, so I highly recommend it (and the entire series!). Add it to your TBR today!

Jody Hedlund is such a good writer. I believe she writes these for young adults but I really enjoy them. I hope there is another in the series.

The Growing Need for Sweet Young Adult Romances

By Jody Hedlund

This past year my youngest daughter turned twelve and entered seventh grade. And she decided that she wanted to read my books.

Of course, I was thrilled that she was taking an interest in my writing. But since my adult historical romances are more intense and contain some mature themes, I handed her the young adult series I’ve written.

As she started the first book, I peeked in her room a time or two to ask her how she liked it.

“It’s the best book you’ve ever read, right?” I teased.

“It’s okay,” she replied, teasing me right back.

The true test for how much she liked the series came when she couldn’t put the book down. She hid away in her room and read all day. Then she read the second book the next day and the third book the day after that.

She never did gush over the series. But she didn’t need to. Her serious reading marathon told me all I needed to know! Then when I was writing the fourth book in the series, she asked me if she could read it early before it was published which was another testament to how much she enjoyed the series.

“As long as you promise to say that I’m your favorite author,” I said, teasing her again.

I’m happy to say that she finished A Loyal Heart just as quickly as the others. Although I’m not sure that I’m her favorite author, I’m satisfied that she loved the series.

Even more, I’m thrilled that I could hand her sweet romances full of chivalrous qualities—like courage, sacrifice, honor, and loyalty. As she’s being entertained, she’s learning lessons about character traits that are important in relationships.

Wholesome clean romances for teens

My daughter, like other young teens I’ve talked to, really enjoys medieval settings and stories. In some ways, those kinds of stories connect them to the princess fairy tales they used to love when they were little. Let’s face it, even adult readers still love stories about knights and castles and daring damsels!

In a book market for teens that has grown increasingly dark, jaded, and sexual, I only wish I had more to offer my daughter and other young women. It’s my passion to continue providing wholesome, clean romances for teens, books I know will encourage and uplift as well as entertain.

How about YOU? Is there a teen reader you know who needs an alternative to what’s available in the market? I encourage you to gift them with A Loyal Heart. And make sure to enter the giveaway for a chance to win the entire series that you can read, pass along, or even gift to your library.

This is a great read! It kept me guessing who the bad guy was clear to the end. The devotion and love the husband had toward his wife only to have it rebuffed added to the suspense. Love and faith prevail in the end, but will they trust each other?
on April 2, 2018
Format: Kindle Edition

Spies, lies, murder, intrigue, revenge, a struggling marriage, a tentative faith found and a family united like never before. A Flute in the Willows may be a handful to read but the subject matter is certainly interesting. I do enjoy a spy-thriller with a subtle romantic twist and this one fits that bill. Carole Brown has done a good job with this the second in her The Spies of World War II series!

Marilyn R
on March 26, 2018
Format: Paperback
An engaging and emotional packed story of romantic suspense set post WWII era with Jerry and Josie Patterson. Josie was focused on her skating competitions and reaching for the stars while her husband was serving as a spy during the war. Jerry’s return home brought another man than the one she had fallen in love with, suffering from PTSD and the fear of being followed home because of all that transpired while serving in Germany. Jerry’s return also seemed to bring some newcomers to town. Josie is sought out by one of them, and asked to perform at his gatherings to raise money for a project by playing her flute. Will Jerry and Josie’s lives be spared? The story will keep readers turning page after page until the end to see what is transpiring next. Carole Brown weaved another great story filled with dimensional characters facing challenges to overcome as they are confronted from one episode after another that are disturbing and dangerous. The story has an interwoven Christian message that God is there in the midst of turmoil.

How Great is Our God! By Carole Brown

And the peace of God which passes all understanding shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.Philippians 4:7

It seems everywhere you turn today, the world is a mess. I try to keep up with current events, but sometimes I find myself pulling back away from it all. The enemy of us all would drown us in disbelief, doubt and worry if we would allow it. I find my spirit beginning to flounder in that sea of distress and must need to revive it with the good things of God.

This is Book Two

In my newest WWII Spies series, in book two, soon to be released, both Jerry and Josie Patterson are rebellious, self-centered people. Neither have given much thought to God, and both have gone gung-ho after their own pleasures and desires.

Jerry not only suffers a serious physical injury, but his spirit is troubled by actions taken as a spy in Germany. Guilt over the death of a sweet woman, guilt over all the deceit he needed to use, guilt over the temptations that knocked, and though he didn’t give in to them, nevertheless, troubles his mind and soul. Who do you turn to when you have no God in your life?

Josie, filled with elaborate plans on becoming an Olympic participant once the horror of war is over, ignores all the people in her life—except when it’s convenient for her to use them. All that matters is attaining her goal and Jerry. Running roughshod over all others, forgiving and forbearing as they are, is her usual ploy in getting what she wants. So who do you turn to when all your dreams turn to ashes?

It’s only after each one of them receives a severe injury that prevents them from doing what they want, only when they think they’ve lost the other, that they begin to listen to what God is teaching them.

Isn’t that so in our own lives? Many times we go headstrong toward our goals, without prayer or definite assurance from God that it’s what he wants for us. It seems a good thing, beneficial, and desirable so it must be good for us, right?

God is so great, so faithful, so loving in pulling us back, in teaching us that He is our all in all. Our strength in times of deep distress and trial, our anchor when the storms of life are blowing us off course, our shield when others would hurt or wound our spirits…our peace through it all.

May we, like Josie and Jerry, learn that our God IS a great God. We need have no fear; he does not fail.

I love Authors Interview 15

This is Michelle Griep

Hello again to I love Authors Interview 15. Today we have Michelle Griep author of The Innkeeper’s Daughter – Let’s all give Michelle a warm greeting.

Welcome Michelle, I am delighted to interview you on my lovely couch. I’m so glad you are doing a blog tour with Celebrate Lit which runs from 15th – 28th March.

Now Michelle please indulge me and imagine that we are on a desert island. Yes, I know sun, sea and solitude as my questions are based on this prerequisite!

Firstly let’s talk about books on the desert island..

What book would you crave to read (you already have the bible, so please pick another book)?

MichelleMy all-time favourite book that I re-read on a regular basis is Charlotte Bronte’s, Jane Eyre. Beneath all Jane’s outward meekness is a lioness who knows herself.

Yes, she is a strong character, Michelle and one we can learn from. You will certainly have time to re-read this novel and savour the delights of its contents.

While busily trying to catch your dinner..

You are given one wish, but there is a clause which means you can only ask to be an animal. What creature would you like to be?

Michelle – Judging by the lifestyle of my boxer, Miss Ada Clare, I’ll be a dog. Does life get any better than perpetual naps interrupted by a good back scratch, treats, and a walk outside every now and then?

I love your dog’s name Michelle, it so cool. It’s certainly a dog’s life, mind you, my cat has a life similar to your dog!

Now I want to know about you Michelle..

On the island you have time to think, can you tell me why you decided to become a writer?

Michelle – Because being a pirate is frowned upon and I really didn’t want to become a life insurance salesman. Besides, being an author was completely unavoidable since I’ve got this strange writing addiction. I can’t not write. It’s how I make sense of the world.

Lol, I love your answer. Because being a pirate is frowned upon! I suppose they do have a bad reputation. Look at Black Beard and Captain Jack Sparrow. It’s the eyeliner that gets me!

I’m not sure what your answer to this question is going to be after the last one!

If you could be one of your characters which would it be and why?

Michelle – Hah! I’d be Mr. Nutbrown. I’d love to speak to people only through a puppet.

I used to love doing that Michelle, it’s such a fun way to communicate with children and you can almost get away with anything! Adults are another thing, they don’t always have the same sense of humour. But yes, I’d say go for it, be Mr. Nutbrown!

Sadly we have come to the last question..

To leave the island, you have to describe your main character in five words, can you tell me what they would be?

Michelle – Protective.  Handsome. Daring. Bold. Cunning.

Michelle, Officer Alexander Moore sounds like an intriguing character – I am looking forward to finding out more about him.

I have really enjoyed our chat, Michelle.

Thank you for taking the time to be here with us today. I hope my readers have learned some interesting things about you, I certainly have!

Please give Michelle a huge round of applause.

I hope you have a successful blog tour.

Michelle – thank you, Margaret, I have enjoyed being here with you on your couch.

Thank you, readers, for popping over, to read I love Authors Interview 15.

Don’t forget there is a GIVEAWAY at the end of this post, so please comment and enter in order to have a chance of winning Michelle’s prize.

A London officer goes undercover to expose a plot against the Crown

Dover, England, 1808: Officer Alexander Moore goes undercover as a gambling gentleman to expose a high-stakes plot against the king—and he’s a master of disguise, for Johanna Langley believes him to be quite the rogue. . .until she can no longer fight against his unrelenting charm.

All Johanna wants is to keep the family inn afloat, but when the rent and the hearth payment are due at the same time, where will she find the extra funds? If she doesn’t come up with the money, there will be nowhere to go other than the workhouse—where she’ll be separated from her ailing mother and ten-year-old brother.

Alex desperately wants to help Johanna, especially when she confides in him, but his mission—finding and bringing to justice a traitor to the crown—must come first, or they could all end up dead.

About the Author

MichelleGriepMichelle Griep has been writing since she first discovered blank wall space and Crayolas. She seeks to glorify God in all that she writes—except for that graffiti phase she went through as a teenager. She resides in the frozen tundra of Minnesota, where she teaches history and writing classes for a local high school co-op. An Anglophile at heart, she runs away to England every chance she gets, under the guise of research. Really, though, she’s eating excessive amounts of scones while rambling around a castle. Michelle is a member of ACFW (American Christian Fiction Writers) and MCWG (Minnesota Christian Writers Guild). Guest Post from Michelle Griep

Celebrating Oak Apple Day

Spring is just around the corner, or maybe it’s in full bloom in your neck of the woods. Regardless, by this time of year, everyone is ready to celebrate. . .and nothing new is under the sun. For centuries people have been eager to welcome budding greenery and warmth.

In my recent release, The Innkeeper’s Daughter, I incorporated a spring holiday that’s been around for over 500 years in England, one you may never heard of.

Oak Apple Day.

This ancient celebration dates back to the year 1651. At the time, Charles II escaped the Roundhead army by taking cover in an oak tree. Everyone loved ol’ Charlie and was glad he lived, so in his honor, a new national holiday was born—one that in some parts of England is still celebrated today.

Another name for this annual event is Royal Oak Day and the festivities occur every May 29th. Celebration traditions vary from parades to the ringing of bells, but one thing that is standard is that it’s a day to pin an oak leaf on your lapel. If you fail to wear one, you could end up getting pinched.

The hero in my latest release is kind enough to remind the heroine that she forgot to pin on her leaf, thus saving her from untoward pinches. Interested in hearing more about this gallant fellow and the forgetful miss?

Here’s a blurb about The Innkeeper’s Daughter

Tension is high with the threat of a Napoleonic attack in Regency England, but risk from abroad means nothing when there’s danger at home.

Officer Alexander Moore goes undercover as a gambling gentleman to expose a high-stakes plot against the crown—and he’s a master of disguise, for Johanna Langley believes him to be quite the rogue . . . until she can no longer fight against his unrelenting charm.

It’s a race against time for them both.
