I love authors Interview 3
This is JoAnn Durgin
Welcome to “I love Authors Interview 3” in this interview we meet JoAnn Durgin, author of The Valentine Verse – Let’s all give JoAnn a warm greeting.
I am delighted to meet you, JoAnn! It is a pleasure to have you sitting on my couch today.
JoAnn – Thanks so much. I’m looking forward to answering your questions!
I’m so glad you are doing a blog tour with Celebrate Lit as it gives me an opportunity to get to know you better.
JoAnn – It’s my first blog tour. I’ll admit I’m a bit nervous, but at the same time, I’m also very excited!
I’m sure you will have a ball – I’ve done one and they are great.
Shall we start? Now I want you to imagine that we are on a desert island. This means we are going back to basics.
JoAnn – Fine by me! Let’s hear your questions.
My first question then is…
Who would you like to be marooned on the island with and why?
JoAnn – Very intriguing question. At the risk of making the rest of my family mad, I might say (above all others) my granddaughter, Amelia Grace. She’ll be three in early February, and she’s the light of our lives (first grandchild). Why Amelia? Because I raised her mother, and I have a wealth of memories and supposed wisdom gained from years of living. What a joy it would be to see her learning new things every day. It would keep me smiling and my spirits uplifted! As it is, I adore hearing her string words into sentences and seeing her embrace new concepts. Without a doubt, she’s the cutest, smartest child who ever walked the planet! Plus, she has really great skin that doesn’t burn like mine, so she’d be “brown as a berry” as my mother used to say and she loves the ocean!
Sounds like Amelia would be great company for you – and the things you could learn together. I see you and Amelia having the time of your lives together! Sun, sea, fun and laughter.
So onto the next question JoAnn
What luxury would you like to have washed up on the beach?
JoAnn – Lipstick, lip balm, chapstick or something, anything, to protect my lips. I live simply and don’t ask for much, but if I don’t have something to moisten my dry lips, I will bite them to death. Trust me, that would be a miserable existence. Oh, a dual-purpose lip balm/toothpaste would be ideal! Has anyone invented that yet? Sounds gross, but I can’t sleep with myself if I don’t brush my teeth. Hmm. Perhaps I should rethink. A good peppermint-flavored balm might do the trick. Or maybe I should ask for a strong medicating drug…
I’ll tell you what, JoAnn, we shall be generous and allow you the two as you are being modest in your request. We might even throw in the medication too!
JoAnn, I think you will like this one
You find a piece of paper with a pencil left behind from the previous Author who was shipwrecked here, what encouraging message would you leave for the next castaway?
JoAnn – Well, assuming it’s yet another author/poor soul stranded on the island, I’d most likely write something like, Don’t Stop Writing! And, of course, God is Faithful! I’d encourage them to write on whatever they could find until the pencil is a nub, and then find something to sharpen that nub and keep on going. Even if the writing is discovered posthumously, it’s bound to be fascinating! (Can you tell I enjoyed Swiss Family Robinson and Robin Crusoe as a kid?)
Two very good suggestions JoAnn, I suspect they will take your advice especially if they don’t find any skeletons! Which means you would have escaped like the Swiss Family Robinson thus bringing hope to the castaway.
Question number four
On the island you have time to think, can you tell me why you decided to become a writer?
JoAnn – It wasn’t a conscious decision where I sat down one day and announced, “I’m going to be a writer!” I’ve actually known a few people who did that, and guess what? They’re still writing their first novel—20 years or more later. That puts undue pressure on a person to state such a thing, and it can be very intimidating.
I honestly feel that I’m following the Lord’s leading in this writing journey. He put the plans in place and literally three things came to pass (doesn’t that sound literary?) before I could leave the financial security of my full-time paralegal position three years ago. Systematically, and somewhat miraculously in the case of the last thing that fell into place (a reason why I named my hero Thornton in The Valentine Verse, as a matter of fact), the way was paved for me to “transition” into the role of full-time author. I realize how few writers can enjoy the freedom I do to pursue my passion full-time. I work harder now that I have ever have, and truly love every minute. In the case of writing for the Lord’s glory, it’s a high honor and a privilege!
I love your answer JoAnn, and as you say it is a high honour and a privilege to write for the Lord’s glory. I hope your book is successful.
Sadly this is the last question
I know you like writing but do you have another passion?
JoAnn – Sleeping would be a passion, but I get so little of it! Seriously, besides writing, reading is a serious passion of mine. I begin and end each day reading—devotionals and the Bible in the morning and generally fiction at night. Another passion of mine is travelling, and I was blessed to have done quite a bit BC (before children), as well as in the last few years since I haven’t been, um, chained to the old 9 to 5 desk. If I’d been taller, I would probably have been a pilot or a flight attendant. I adore flying, and I love to visit most anywhere.
It sounds like you have had an interesting life so far JoAnn. I pray that your writing ventures will take you to other lands in spirit if not in body. You know, this has been such a pleasure having you beside me on my couch.
Time to round up
Thank you, JoAnn, for being such a good sport. I hope you have a successful blog tour.
JoAnn – Thank you so much for your interest in my book and for encouraging Christian authors!

Valentine’s Day isn’t just for February 14th anymore! Love should be celebrated every day of the year. That’s Thornton Fielding’s philosophy. In spite of a few false starts in the arena of love, he holds out hope he’ll eventually find the woman of his dreams. The problem? He loves his job, and there’s no end in sight to his travels. But when Thornton returns to his tiny hometown of Cherish, Minnesota, he meets a beautiful and intriguing woman he believes might be God’s answer to ending his bachelor status—permanently.
Vara Alexandris is soured on love and scoffs at the notion of soul mates. But soon after meeting the handsome and unconventional Thornton, the speech and language pathologist suspects he might be the perfect ally to help jump-start her stroke patient’s recovery—if only Vara can keep Thornton grounded in Cherish long enough. This man who spouts romanticized and idealistic ideas about love seems all too eager to resume his world travels. Could it be Thornton actually prefers globetrotting in order to avoid a romantic relationship?
Is it time for Vara to call the dreamer’s bluff? And can Thornton convince Vara to put past heartache behind her and trust in God’s plan for her heart?
Join Thornton and Vara in USA Today bestselling author JoAnn Durgin’s latest release full of her trademark humor, romance, and lively, small-town characters in a story of God’s fierce passion and loving guidance for His children—if only they pay attention!
