This is Elaine Stock

Welcome to I love Authors Interview 9 today we are talking to Elaine Stock, author of Her Good Girl – Let’s all give Elaine a warm greeting.

Hi, Elaine. It is a pleasure to have you sitting on my couch today.

I’m so glad you are doing a blog tour with Celebrate Lit from 1st-14th February as it gives me an opportunity to get to know you better.

Elaine – Thanks, Margaret for hosting me on your blog, and for your interest in Her Good Girl. Wow! I wasn’t aware that you lived in England—how exciting! After reading your bio on your website and relating to what you’ve said about how life can be challenging and how God sorts you out, I’m honored that you’re sharing this novel with your viewers.

Ah, thank you, Elaine, God is really important to me, He is my best friend. Yes, I am from England, but I have relatives who live in America. My aunt and uncle emigrated after WW2 as my uncle (who was polish) didn’t like the climate here!

So let’s get started, Elaine. I have five questions for you but we need to imagine that we are on a desert island. This means we are going back to basics.

My first question is..

You find a rowing boat hidden in a cave, what name would you paint on it and why?

Elaine – What a fascinating question. The first thought that came to mind is “HOPE,” and all in capital letters. I believe firmly that if you don’t cling to hope you will lose your grip on life and the troubles and struggles in this world will swallow you whole… or, in sticking to the boat and sailing theme, the big ocean waves will capsize the boat. Since I don’t swim, I don’t want to be in that situation—without hope. I cling to my Heavenly Father’s hand. It’s not easy, I admit, and I certainly don’t go around each day in a hop and skip motion of glee as I face the unexpected that life often flings at each one of us, but that’s the very reason why I try my best to grasp at HOPE.

I would push this boat out into the sea with the wish its impervious to not only water but to any threat because it’s nice to imagine a little boat sailing around the world with this big (at least, I think so) message for many to see.

Oh, wait. Did I just ruin my chances of getting off the island?

HOPE is a brilliant name Elaine, we all need that to conquer the challenges of life.

I didn’t say what state the boat was in Elaine, so no you haven’t ruined your chances of getting off the island. You might have to mend it first though!

Onto question number two..

What favourite sentence do you like from your most recent published book?

Elaine – There are a few lines from Her Good Girl that still make me choke with tears. However, if I have to pick one it would be:

See, only God is bigger than my fears, my limited earthly joys, the horrors and craziness of this world, or of the beauty of fractured families coming together and healing.

And a beautiful sentence to Elaine with a great truth. Yes indeed, only God is bigger than our earthly experiences.

I hope you are ready for question three?

You are allowed to invite another person to stay with you on the desert island, which of your characters would you choose and why?

Elaine – Without a doubt, Callie, the woman who befriends Sadie. Although several years younger than I am, I think we would get along well, have lots to share and talk about, yet be able to respect our need for personal space. Like Callie, I too come from a shaky past, and with the way she goes through her days, determined to see the brightness instead of darkness, we’d click!

Callie sounds like a lady I could get on with to Elaine. In fact, I think you are also a woman I could befriend as you have an interesting past. I love people with stories!

Let’s go on to the next question..

On the island you have time to think, can you tell me why you decided to become a writer?

Elaine – I grew up surrounded by all things book related. Ranging from a mother who took me often to the library and gave me a wonderful example of the joys of reading by always having a book in her hand to an aunt who orally shared the most amazing stories to being surrounded by the New York City culture of arts and entertainment. These were definitely influences. Now, that was the physical/logistical answer. The emotional one: I needed to escape from the above mentioned shaky home life I’d alluded to in my above response. Reading all kinds of fiction and seeing in my mind’s eye how so many characters made it out of rough and tumble situations and came out pretty much okay was a huge encouragement to me and gave me a natural feel-good buzz.

Oh I agree, that’s what I love about books, Elaine, you can escape into another world and totally immerse yourself in another reality with characters who overcome. It is such a source of encouragement.

And now the final question..

To leave the island, you have to describe your main character in five words, can you tell me what they would be?

Sadie, an about to turn eighteen-year-old is:

Wow, powerful words Elaine, I am looking forward to reading your book.

It’s time to wrap up..
